FAQs

Wallcovering

Wallcovering is always more economical than a mural.
Non Woven (N) is the more economical quality.
Likewise, the papers without repeat or with a small repeat have less wastage, and you will therefore not need as many rolls.

If it is a wallcovering, you can use our web roll calculator. By providing us with this data we can tell you the rolls you need, always rounding up:

· Wall width
· Wall height
· Roll width
· Roll length
· Repeat or rapport (size of the design that will be repeated along the length of the roll). The bigger the repeat, the more rolls you will need.

Raffias are more difficult because they are less easy to handle due to the natural fibres. Likewise, Raffias need to be pre-analysed to decide whether the rolls or panels need to be overlapped – this decision requires a certain degree of knowledge.

Also, the wider the roll, the more difficult it is to hang – simply due to your arm span.

Hanging wallcovering is not a difficult task, but yes, it does require organisation, a few simple tools and some extra time to set aside.

A measuring tape is essential for correctly measuring the wall/s and for calculating how much wallcovering you will need, and also for measuring the height of the panels.

A brush or roller, whichever you prefer. Some people prefer the roller because you can make sure the surface is glued more evenly, and there are those who find it more cumbersome to hold and dip a normal brush into a bucket of glue. The important thing is that both must have a width of 10-15 cm, for time efficiency more than anything else.

Glue to apply to the wallcovering, it can be powdered or ready-made. The type of glue varies depending on the quality of the wallcovering: non-woven; vinyl, contract; metallics; silk; natural fibres… It can therefore either be cellulose glue or glue for heavy wallcoverings and it is essential that you use the correct one in each case. You will also need to check the instructions t osee if the glue should be applied to the wall or to the wallcovering.

A spatula to remove the air bubbles. You can use a Tupperware lid or another homemade invention, the important thing is that you can gently smooth away any bubbles on the surface.

A damp cloth to be able to wipe the wallcovering clean, although cellulose glue does not dirty or damage the paper (except for delicate natural raffia papers).

A Stanley knife to cut off the excess wallcovering. The length should always be calculated slightly longer than the height of the ceiling. The wallcovering should never be cut to the exact height of the wall, you should add at least 5 cm more as walls are often uneven.

Roller for the joins. It is not essential, but we do recommend it as it helps to increase the adhesion of the joins between panels.

Kraft paper to protect the floor. Another non-essential item, but if it’s your first time hanging wallcovering, it’s easy for the glue to drip onto the floor. This material will save you cleaning time at the end of the hanging process. Also, the paper often includes a roll of decorator’s tape, so it is very easy and fast to put in place.

Plumb line or spirit level to check wallcovering is straight and not at an angle.

Non Woven (N), Vinyl (V) and Metallics Gold (G) and Silver (S) wallcoverings are easily removable thanks to their non-woven fabric base and the cellulosic glue used for their placement. The way to do it is simple: you pull the wallcovering gently down from the top and the wallcovering will easily come away from the wall.

If the wall was previously in good condition and if you have used the correct glue, there is no reason why any marks would be left.

It’s purely to do with how long you would like to keep your wallcovering on the wall! The wallcoverings, if used in the proper way, do not have an expiration date. There are wallcoverings that are timeless and that last a lifetime, and wallcoverings whose designs will go in and out of fashion.

There is no need for an expert. You can do it yourself! You just need a brush or roller, the correct glue and a positive attitude (a 400 x 280 cm mural can easily be hung in 3 hours)! All our wallcoverings incorporate very easy-to-follow instructions that you can download from the product sheet page on our website. Contract quality and Raffia or natural fibre wallcoverings are more demanding to hang because the panels usually overlap and a very precise double cut must be made.

The murals arrive with numbering that must be followed to ensure that the artistic design matches perfectly. This numbering is vital and should never been cut off – you will lose the correct order of the panels. Cut them off at the end when the panels are all in place.

However, wallcoverings that are not murals arrive as one continuous roll that must be cut to the height of the wall (although never the exact height, as you may be left short). When the wallcovering is a plain design, it is easy because you do not have to question the pattern or how it fits together. However, when the wallcovering has a pattern, it is essential that the design is continuous between each panel, and it fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.

Yes, but be careful with how porous the surface is. You will need to prime the surface and we always recommend a test hanging.

We have a sample service available so you can do these tests.

There is powdered glue and ready-made glue which is already mixed with water. It is a specific type of glue for wallcoverings and is found in hardware or painting and decorating stores.

There is also a cellulose glue for light-weight wallcoverings a glue for heavy-weight wallcoverings.

The difference between them lies in the composition and strength. We always recommend reading the instructions on the rolls before hanging them to decide whether to buy one type of glue or another.

No, although we do recommend putting some protective paper or cardboard by the foot of the wall because of any glue that might drip, although wallcovering glue is easily removed with water.

It’s important that the wallcovering is hung after the space has been painted (the ceilings, doors…) and after the flooring is put down (this usually creates a lot of dust and dirt).

In general, it should be hung after any work is done that may damage the walls.

Non Woven (N), Vinyl (V), Contract, Natural Fibres (Raffias), Metallics: Gold (G) and Silver (S), Linen (L) and Silk (SK).

Depending on the quality, the width of the roll, the texture, the composition, the hanging or installation, and the price will all vary. We are always innovating and will continue to incorporate new wallcovering bases or substrates.

Murals are wallcoverings that have a unique and non-repeating artistic design or pattern. It’s like a huge painting on the wall.

Coordonné always offers a standard measurement for the murals so that the design can be seen at its best, but this measurement can be changed according to the client’s needs. On our website there is a simulator to play with the measurements of the height and width of the murals. If the result does not work aesthetically, Coordonné’s in-house design department can work on it until the design comes together perfectly.

Wallcoverings, on the other hand, are rolls of wallcovering that have a pattern that repeats across the width and height of the wall. This repetition is what we call the repeat or rapport and it is a piece of information that is on the product file and is used to calculate the number of rolls needed to cover a wall.

Both the murals and the rolls of wallcoverings are packed and delivered in rolls, although they are presented in different ways. With the murals, the rolls are grouped as even panels and as odd panels and each panel has a number that must be followed in order for the image to come together as one.

The wallcovering is also delivered in rolls, but they are continuous rolls of approximately 10 metres. This may vary depending on the collection.

Both formats – murals and papers – are hung with the same tools and materials.

The Non Woven quality is the most popular because it is 100% eco-friendly, it is extra matte, it is more economical than the other qualities and it is also washable and fire retardant.

The main difference is in the texture and washability. The Non Woven quality (N) is washable and has a completely smooth and matte texture. The Vinyl quality (V) is extra-washable, thanks to an outer PVC layer, and it has a grainy texture. The (N) quality is 100% eco-friendly.

In the product sheet of the website you will always find the different qualities available for the design you want. You will be able to verify that usually they are always offered in Non Woven (N) and Vinyl (V), unless it is a collection which we feel does not suit the full range of qualities.

We also have a personalisation team for projects of a certain volume, so you can always ask any questions via email.

The Vinyl quality (V) is the best option for this use, as it is more washable and has greater thickness and resistance than the Non Woven (N). We recommend this quality for bathrooms and kitchens since these are areas that usually have a greater wear and tear.

Quality (N) however, can also be used in bathroom and kitchen areas that are not directly in contact with water and that have good ventilation or little moisture condensation (water vapour from cooking).
The Contract quality is what is most frequently used in hotel and restaurant bathrooms where there is a lot of wear and tear.

Yes, but in the case of surfaces that are porous, such as wood, they need to have a primer applied to help seal the pores. Always carry out tests first and assess the issue of the joins according to the width of the paper.

Regarding furniture, well, it depends on the shape. Screens or room dividers are most commonly used due to the absence of curves and difficult shapes. The inside of cabinets is also a popular choice.

Yes, and it looks wonderful! It’s just a little trickier to do because of gravity. To hang wallcovering on a ceiling we recommend using 50 cm width rolls because they are more manageable than those that are wider.

Wallcovering Customisation

Coordonné has its own manufacturing and design line, so yes, we can consider personal designs with a consultation and a cost estimate.

You must be able to guarantee that it is your own design and that it does not infringe the rights of third parties. It must also have the required resolution and formats which are indicated by our design department.

Yes! On the Coordonné website you can customise your mural to the measurements of your walls. You can ask our design department for changes in the aesthetic elements of the mural so that they complement where your furniture is placed. For example, moving a bird that is hidden behind a headboard, changing the scale of a flower which needs to be cut because of a door, etc.
